Kayaking
- Pacific Northwest Style
We
were settling down for supper, when the dinner show arrived: a pod
of orcas, their fins slicing the waters off our island campsite.
It was just one highlight of four days spent kayaking the inlets
of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, with Northern Lights Expeditions.
And this month, the company launches Wild Orca Adventures, which
guarantees whale sightings, or you get a free return trip.
Each
day, our group of nine - from seasoned paddlers to newbies - boarded
stable, two-person kayaks and set out for four hours of exploring.
Between pit stops on tiny isles, we spotted plenty of front-row
action: bald eagles, mink, seals, otters and even a bear.
Back at base
camp, tents came equipped with pillows encased in soft flannel,
and the menu included everything from sushi to Starbucks coffee.
The guides even entertained - like Joi, who serenaded us before
the night paddle.
Trips depart
June through September, and start at $799, including meals.
