Conservation - Inside Passage Canada

Conservation

Conservation of wildlife and habitat in Canada's Inside Passage region is a key factor in our policy and decision-making, and has been since 1983. There are some serious threats to the health and welfare of the wildlife of the Inside Passage. The wild salmon and Northern Resident orca populations are particularly at risk.

Orcas of the Inside Passage CanadaThere are some great local organizations working tirelessly on behalf of the seas, forests and animals of this remarkable area. We support their important work through donations, and we encourage you to do the same.

Living Oceans Society
www.livingoceans.org
Living Oceans Society promotes the need for a healthy ocean and healthy communities on Canada’s Pacific Coast. Based on the rich fishing and aboriginal traditions that surround us, they strive to combine their conservation vision with the economic and cultural needs of the people who live and work on this magnificent coast. They believe that people are integrally part of the environment and by striving to conserve the ocean’s wealth and abundance we can build sustainable communities today and for future generations.

BC Wild Killer Whale Adoption Program
www.killerwhale.org
By "adopting" a wild killer whale, you can directly support critical research on the wild orcas of western Canada.

Johnstone Strait Killer Whale Interpretive Centre Society
This program monitors the activities around local marine mammals, especially killer whales, and provides visitors with information on local marine species and marine mammal viewing guidelines. The society also manages the remarkable Bones Project museum and interpretive center at Telegraph Cove.

Mainland Enhancement of Salmonid Species Society (Scott Cove Hatchery)
An important hatchery for coho salmon since 1982.

Raincoast Conservation Society
www.raincoast.org
Founded in 1990, Raincoast Conservation Society is a non-profit research and public education organization. The Society works in partnership with scientists, First Nations, local communities and Non-governmental Organizations to build support for decisions that protect marine and rainforest habitat on BC’s central and north coast.

Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform (CARR)
www.farmedanddangerous.org
Salmon aquaculture, also known as salmon "farming", continues to pose a great threat to the wild salmon population of British Columbia. Hazardous chemicals and destructive practices used by the fish farms threatens the health of wild runs of salmon, as well as that of the human inhabitants of the area and those that buy and eat the farmed fish. Groups working to promote safe farming practices, including the Living Oceans Society, Raincoast Conservation Society, Raincoast Research Society and the David Suzuki Foundation, have joined together to create CARR, whose mission is to protect wild salmon, coastal ecosystems, coastal communities and human health from destructive fish farming practices.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of excellent local organizations doing critical work in conservation of the British Columbia coast and islands. There are other groups, as well, staffed by dedicated people and volunteers working hard to educate the public and preserve our precious natural resources. We encourage you to support their efforts.
