Celestial events:
Full moons in 2008 are on July 18,
August 16 and September 15. Trips on or near full moon dates
are gold.
The Perseid meteor shower runs July 17
through August 24. The peak night of the shower is August
12, highlighted in the schedule in blue.
Summer solstice is June 21 and Autumnal equinox is September
23.
September is the best month to see the northern
lights (aurora borealis).
What's
the Significance of Full Moons, etc.?: We list
full moons, etc. simply because people often ask us! Many
enjoy seeing a full moon rise in the night sky when they're
camping. The tidal rise and fall is greater during full
and new moons (new moons are two weeks after full moons).
The lowest tides are best for seeing some of the low intertidal
life. The currents are also greatest during periods of large
tides and full and new moons; that sometimes actually limits
kayaking route choices somewhat. New moons (when you see
no moon) of course leave us with the darkest sky and the
brightest bioluminescence on our legendary nighttime paddles,
always one of the true highlights of a trip with Northern
Lights.
* Canadian
Rates are approximate and based on recent exchange rates.
For current exchange rate information, see www.oanda.com
or click the Exchange Rates button in the left column of
this page. The Canadian/US dollar exchange rates have been
fluctuating rapidly in recent weeks and months. Since our
operating costs are primarily in Canadian dollars, the US
prices we charge have had to follow those changes to allow
us to cover those costs.
