Lodge Based Sea Kayaking Tours
After
18 highly successful seasons of offering lodge/guest house-based
kayaking tours, we are taking a break to focus on our classic, camping
and kayaking journeys. Amid a flood of requests that we continue
these trips, we expect to have a new series of lodg-based trips
resuming in 2009. We will post details when they area available.
Some
Information on Guest House Sea Kayaking Trips
A “guest
house,” or lodge-based adventure trip is just right for many
travelers. Here, they are ideal for those who want to enjoy the
beauty of paddling British Columbia's coast with the comfort of
staying in a cozy room each night. With the comfort always available,
each day's pace and activities can be set around the conditions
at hand, with numerous options to fill the time.
No
place on the British Columbia coast is as rich in wildlife as this.
Porpoises, dolphins, seals and whales – orcas, minkes and
humpbacks – frequently pass, not far from your cozy hideaway.
Eagles perch in the trees and dive for salmon; seabirds swarm over
schools of herring.
These trips
are perfect for families, groups of friends, or the solo traveler.
And they’re an especially good fit for those couples who want
different levels of adventure. One can be going all day long while
the other has a choice of simply staying at the lodge and relaxing,
or anything in between.
We typically
include a day-long grizzly watching tour with each guest house adventure,
to give you a special day of encountering another of the planet’s
most impressive species.

Itinerary
Day
0: Arrive in Port McNeill, British Columbia, on the northeastern
shore of Vancouver Island, by air or road. Introductory evening
meeting with your guides and fellow travelers after settling into
your comfortable hotel or B&B.
Day 1: Day-long, boat-based grizzly bear watching
trip into the Great Bear Wilderness. Late afternoon arrival at the
Guest House, introduction to the kayaking portion of your trip and
a restful night.
Days 2-4 (5-day trips) or 2-5 (6-day trips): Day
trips from the guest house, exploring channels and islands, seashore
intertidal life, searching for eagles nests and forest wildlife
on the low tide beaches. Great opportunities to see whales on most
of the possible kayaking routes. After dark, a “night paddle”
to experience the incredible glowing, bioluminescent waters of the
Inside Passage. You always have your very comfortable guest house
to spend evenings in and the exceptional meals of our Blackfish
Café. Finally, your days end with a restful night in the
guest house.
Last Day: A final morning of kayaking and searching
for whales, savoring the final moments of your incredible adventure.
Water taxi trip with your choice of a visit to the Native village
of Alert Bay and the U’Mista Cultural Centre and a late afternoon
trip to Port McNeill, or directly from the lodge back to Port McNeill,
if you want to catch an earlier flight to Vancouver.
The Meals
Each
meal with Northern Lights is a delightfully tasty creation of your
two, hard-working guides in what we call our Blackfish Café.
Inspired by the finest foods both local and exotic, from the coast
and far beyond, our guests are routinely awed by what our guides
create. Click here to read comments from our
guests about our meals.
