The Season So Far...

As our August newsletter arrives at the mid-point of our season, this month’s notes arrive at a perfect time to reflect on the first half of the season and look forward to our adventures still to come.

It’s been another predictably wonderful summer kayaking season of exploration and discovery. Our enthusiastic staff is going overboard to make sure each guest has a great time and is rewarded by encounters with wildlife, a very special habitat, and for many, a new kind of adventure in their lives.

The first part of our season was marked by mostly calm, sunny weather, allowing us almost unlimited paddling days. A couple of our trips had less than ideal conditions (more wind or rain than hoped for) but made the most of them and still came out smiling. While we had a steady number of humpback whales, the orca numbers were quite low compared to any previous season. While almost every group saw some whales, the frequent encounters we are used to by the end of June weren’t up to par.

But in the last three weeks, most of our groups have been treated to some very special and regular orca sightings and even close encounters. (see our reports from the field) From our July 29 Inside Passage/Orca Humpback Odyssey: “We had one of the best orca encounters of the season on day one of this trip! On our way back to camp we were following a big male who was off to our side a ways, when he suddenly changed course, coming up right in front of Helen and Neil’s kayak...

A Few Spaces Still Open

Looking ahead, most of our remaining trips are full or almost full. But for any last-minute planners, including solo travelers, we encourage you to call to check on the few trips that still have space. September is most of our guides’ favorite month in these waters and we love to finish out our season with a couple of incredible journeys.

Our September 17 Wild Orca Adventure finale still has spaces for a few guests and we’d love to fill them up! Orca numbers are still at their peak right through September and thousands of sea birds who spend their summers offshore will be arriving for the fall and winter. And you’ll find some of the calmest average winds/waters all during September and the beautiful morning fog that lifts as the sun burns it off. To top it off, you’ll see very few other boats on the water, making this the most peaceful time of our season.

Check out the rest of the schedule

Note: with trips that haven’t filled on very short notice, we are happy to talk with you about discounts so we can fill up those trips! We look forward to hearing from all of you.

2008 Schedule

Looking farther ahead, our 2008 camping/kayaking trip schedule is online now. We’re again working on reviving our 18-year tradition of lodge-based kayaking trips after a one-year hiatus. We hope to have more information for you by October and we’ll let you know via our newsletters and our web site.
