"Fantastic, awesome do not begin to describe the trip. It was perfect from start to finish. Our numerous whale sightings were absolutely awesome. It literally took my breath away during our close encounters. Everything was very well handled from equipment which was top of the line to all of the arrangements. The guides were fantastic. I honestly do not think there is anything which could have been done any better."

Wild Orca Adventures
Killer Whale Kayak Vacations

When your No. 1 goal is seeing a wild killer whale, or a minke whale or humpback whale for that matter, our Wild Orca Adventure trips are your best choice. With 25 years of experience in this area, we have chosen the No. 1 spot on Earth to see and encounter orcas in the wild. At this spot we have built a camp that will serve as a base for our "guaranteed whales" adventures.

Orcas Kayak TripStill a sea kayaking trip, our focus each day will be on seeing and encountering orcas and other whales in the wild from land and by kayak. Killer whales pass through the waters surrounding this camp more than any other place on the planet and we’ll be there when they do. Humpback whales and minke whales are also occasionally seen in the area.

When we get up each day, whales will be our main focus. Your guides will talk about whales, help you identify individuals and family groups, and tell you about over twenty-five years of research that has gathered information on the whales who live here, in an attempt to understand them and possibly ensure they have a safe, viable habitat to live in in the future.

Orca Kayaking TripThese trips are shorter than our six-day Inside Passage adventures. Here we spend four days kayaking in prime orca waters. If your group does not see any whales on the trip, including the water taxi rides to and from your camp, you are welcome to return in the same year or the following year for a free trip of the same or lesser value, or receive credit toward any of our camping/kayaking trips. Wild Orca Adventure – Typical Itinerary

Day 0: Arrive in Port McNeill, British Columbia, on the northeastern shore of Vancouver Island, by air or road. Introductory evening meeting with your guides and fellow travelers after settling into your comfortable hotel or B&B.

(Note: Day 1 is the first day of your kayaking trip. If you are on a trip scheduled, for example, on August 10, then your Day 0 is August 9 and Days 1-6 are August 10-15.

Day 1: Early morning water taxi ride from Port McNeill to our Wild Orca campsite. After introductory camp and kayak orientation, an afternoon of exploring and whale watching by kayak and from camp.
Days 2-3: Always searching for signs of passing whales, our daily paddling routes from camp can take us along rugged shorelines, past cliffs where eagles perch, through hidden lagoons, into Blackfish Sound, the Inside Passage’s richest wildlife waters, and most of all, where the orcas come to feed on salmon.
Day 4: A final day of kayaking and searching for whales in Johnstone Strait, looking for telltale blows and then fins breaking the surface. Whale watching from the water taxi on it's mid-afternoon return voyage to Port McNeill (arrival about 4:30pm).
An evening get-together with your co-travelers and guides for dinner in town .

Our Wild Orca Adventure vacations have all the first-class elements of our Inside Passage trips: gourmet meals, exceptional, knowledgeable guides, top quality kayaking and camping equipment, great support from our staff, help with your travel plans, all from North America’s most experienced sea kayaking outfitter.

Camping

Comfort in camp is a priority for our guests and they have come to expect our camps to be relaxing, forested sanctuaries in which to enjoy and feel part of the environment. The atmosphere we like to create on our trips is that of an independent band of travelers inhabiting wilderness camps with minimal disturbance to the natural environment. Yet we supply each camp with all the amenities to make sure you’re comfortable, warm and dry. You won’t find a large, group dining structure at a Northern Lights camp. What you will enjoy are comfortable, ecologically sensitive bathroom facilities, warm showers, a renowned ‘Blackfish Café' wilderness kitchen, and a circle of friends around the campfire. You’ll be helping to respect and maintain the land we use and supporting environmentally responsible use of the wilderness.

What's Included

All of your camping & kayaking gear is provided, you only need to bring your personal items. We will provide:
A 3-person tents for each two people; a 2-person tent for singles (each has two doors), sleeping bag, silk/cotton bag liner, soft air/foam sleeping pad, pillow.
Gore-Tex rain/paddling jackets & pants, water bottles & coffee mugs (for you to take home).

Meals

Each meal with Northern Lights, from lunch on Day 1 through lunch on Day 4, is a delightfully tasty creation of your hard-working guides in what we call our “Blackfish Café.” Inspired by the finest foods both local and exotic, from the coast and far beyond, our guests are routinely awed by what our guides create. We use organic food whenever possible and also provide a glass of wine each evening at dinner time. Click here to read comments from our guests about our meals.
