Ecotours
in the Inside Passage
May 4, 2004
- Port McNeill, British Columbia. In today's rapidly changing world,
it is more important than ever for a tour operator to adopt an ecotourism
approach to their travel policies. Northern Lights Expeditions has
long set the standard for responsible ecotourism policies, featuring
them on all their first-class sea kayaking tours in British Columbia's
Inside Passage region.
Northern Lights'
minimum-impact camping techniques and wildlife viewing procedures
are prime examples of responsible ecotourism, essential to the sustainability
of the fragile ecosystems many outfitters operate in. Since 1983,
Northern Lights has led the way in responsible whale watching, wildlife
viewing and wilderness camping. Everything packed in gets packed
out. Strict wildlife viewing guidelines are adhered to, and guides
are specially trained in these areas. Only driftwood is used for
campfires, which are always located below the high water line. Northern
Lights works closely with government agencies and local Native organizations
to make sure their trips meet the highest standards.
"Responsible
ecotourism is a critical component in the conservation of wild areas,"
notes Northern Lights' founder, David Arcese. "Northern Lights
works to protect wild lands and wilderness waters, and to instill
awareness in people's minds of how much it all matters." To
that end, Northern Lights has had a simple plan: introduce guests
to the wonders of kayaking the British Columbia coast and, in doing
so, raise awareness to the importance of conserving this vital wilderness
region.
Northern Lights
has been praised and endorsed by Project SeaWolf's Ecologically
Conscious Outdoor Service (ECOS) for its environmentally responsible
practices and policies, and recognized by EcoTravel.com for its
ecological and cultural consciousness. Audubon Magazine has rated
Northern Lights' Inside Passage tours "North America's #1 Wildlife
Adventures", and Northern Lights continues to promote and support
local organizations working toward conservation and environmental
policy in the region.
Northern Lights
has set the standard for responsible ecotourism in the area and
continues to work to save this critical orca habitat. Contact Northern
