Top
Notch - would come again next week if I could get more time off!
Meals were Fabulous- I was so impressed at the variety, freshness,
and simplicity of the meals. We were very well taken care of.
The word that kept coming up for me through the trip was "abundance".
We were surrounded with beauty in nature, fabulous guides, wonderful
food, a great group, amazing weather, high quality equipment, lots
of laughter and stimulating conversations - not to mention the most
amazing wildlife viewing experiences. The moonrises, and night skies
were awesome to behold. I have traveled all over the world and this
is the best total experience I've had. THANK YOU ALL!
Helen Sheridan, British Columbia

I've
just returned to Wales and wanted to email and say what a truly
fantastic trip I had with Northern Lights week commencing 15th July.
The trip was everything I had hoped it would be and more.
We had an awesome week - we saw and heard Orcas up close as well
as dolphins, porpoise, seals, bald eagles and bears all in beautiful
surroundings. We were so well looked after by all three guides who
ensured our safety at all times, made us wonderful food and made
it a fun and memorable week. It really couldn't have been better,
a holiday of a lifetime for sure. I have been raving on about my
Northern Lights trip since returning home, so expect some more visitors
from Wales shortly!
Many thanks also for your pre trip info and for answering all my
questions, this helped me to decide that I was booking the right
holiday.
Many thanks again.
Kind Regards,
Sophie Cartwright, Wales
My
trip was absolutely one of the best things I have ever participated
in. Both guides were great, the location was superb, and the kayaking,
from equipment to our routes to the wildlife we encountered while
on the water, were fantastic. Northern Lights deserves its reputation
as a first rate firm, I cannot imagine a better experience than
my trip.
Your menu was excellent, healthy, varied and delicious. It really
helped accentuate the top flight service and companionship provided
by our guides.
Jonathan Barley, North Carolina

Brilliant. Every service
was excellent, from April's e-mail contact to the last taxi trip
home. Our B&B was At Water’s Edge. Karen and Chris were
the best hosts I have ever experienced (and I have stayed at Raymond
Blanc’s Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, which is Michelin
starred!) I have never felt so cared for, except at my Mum’s!
It made the whole experience so worry free, knowing that your bags
were safe and that you could ask Karen anything and she would be
able to sort it out for you. The water taxi staff were great, Reg
is a great personality and didn’t mind stopping frequently
to let us look at the bears at the side of the road! April at the
office was super, despite having to mess about with multiple payments
because of British bank paranoia about fraud. The guides made us
excellent, filling breakfasts and suppers and the lunches were just
right for kayaking, tasty but not too heavy.
The equipment
was good, the campsites were beautiful and well arranged and the
guides were superb. The group of people we ended up with on this
trip were fantastic and got on great from the word go. The guides
recognized this straight away and were able to relax into the trip,
knowing that everyone was getting on like a house on fire!! The
atmosphere was amazing, with everyone being helpful at the kitchen
and camp generally and laughing, joking and being supportive all
the way and this made for a great experience for everyone. We were
very lucky. The kayaking was hard for me at times as I had no experience
of this activity, but the support of the guides, especially on moving
day, was crucial in making the whole trip a personal success for
me. The wildlife was also quite obliging, which helped!
Helen
Shilladay, UK

The
overall trip was really lovely. The quality of the equipment and
gear was great. The camp was well maintained and comfortable.
Shawna Hohendorff, Alberta

The trip was
of top notch quality. The kayaks were in excellent shape. The camp
was set up well and was located at the perfect spot. We were able
to see the whales everyday. As well as other wildlife. It was the
trip of a lifetime for me as I was almost hit by an Orca. I am known
by the 13 other people on the trip as the Whale Whisperer now. I
will never forget the awe of watching the whales, sea lions, seals
and eagles. The wildlife was awesome. I have stories to tell all
about my trip.
Joy Levesque, Manitoba

I have had an
interest in participating in the ‘Wild Orca Adventure’
since 2003 when I received a brochure on your trips. I came with
very high expectations with the added interest of sharing this adventure
with my son, now 25. I hoped for a life-long memory of our time
together… you exceeded these expectations as my son and I
shared a very special and memorable experience that we will cherish
for the remainder of our lives. I thank you for providing this opportunity
and the manner that you treat your customers.
Your handbook
is excellent reading beyond its use to prepare for the trip. The
meals were well beyond my expectation with outstanding presentation
and quality. Very healty diet which I follow in my normal routine.
Thank you for this aspect of the ‘Adventure’. (Also,
FYI, I spent 14 years in the restaurant industry primarily in operations
and training).
The beauty of the landscape, the wildlife, quality of equipment,
meals, and support from such remarkable guides (who became friends),
other participants (now also friends), and the kayaking is now embraced
by my son and I for a lifetime.
James Barley, North Carolina

It was a great
experience. Shelby and I would recommend it to others and do it
again.
Wayne Ledford, Texas

Top notch! Great
food, great equipment, great staff. What more could you ask for?
Oh yes, whales, whales, and more whales! The best experience of
my life.
Maureen McClellan, Pennsylvania

Every
aspect of our trip was pretty much how we expected it to be…
just absolutely wonderful! Being from a much warmer climate (Florida),
and not tolerating cold very well, the equipment you supplied such
as tents, sleeping bags, etc were very well adequate. We read through
and followed your recommendations on clothing and other items to
bring as stated in the handbook. Everything one needed to know was
there. Well thought out and thorough. From beginning to end, a well
planned trip. Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience.
Gregory Boyington, Florida

Everything was
just great. The handbook was a great source of information on how
to get there and what to expect when we did. The Meals were awesome.
Took back a few ideas for meals at home. It was awesome. Everything
was in great working condition. The kayaks were beautiful. I am
telling everyone they need to go. It is fun, adventurous, and just
awesome.
Jane Burandt, Minnesota

Northern Lights
is a class act all the way! The meals are more than one can expect
on a "Camping" trip : ) Always presented so amazing! Truely
spoiled! Our guides "Luke, Cory & Samantha" were true
professionals & well knowledgeable about so much. Being that
this was my 3rd time, I was spoiled with having "Luke &
Cory" twice & felt truly honored to see them again. Their
patience with people is amazing!!!
Susan Lahargoue, Arizona

Superb –
It was obvious from the start that Northern Lights was a top-rate
company. Every possible detail was covered. I especially liked the
little extras, like our own labeled dry bags that identified the
bag contents. The meals were nutritious & tasty with a lot of
variety. Best ‘camp’ food I have had. Appreciated the
fresh fruit & vegetables. Great that the hot beverages were
always at the ready whilst at camp.
I had a wonderful time! I loved receiving the handbook in advance
complete with all the information anyone could possibly want –
especially the ‘what to bring’ list. I appreciated having
soap/water/towel ready at all times for washing hands while at camp.
Found myself looking forward to all the meals/picnics because they
were so good & well thought out. Providing rainwear & gear
was an added bonus & so glad that I was advised to bring rubber
boots along. Enjoyed the group dynamics & the opportunity to
go out for a midnight paddle. Guides were extremely accommodating.
Felt safe with the experienced guides. Knowing that we could easily
communicate with Northern Lights via e-mail or phone prior to the
trip was a plus.
Sandra Fenn, British Columbia

We enjoyed the
added touches, such as garlic/pesto and other extras.
Susan Hoover, Alberta

Your online info and
trip booklets were most helpful. The taxi was prompt – a good
service that saved HOURS of paddling to the base camp. I don’t
think we could have transported all our gear, food, etc out via
kayak. We thought this trip was EXCELLENT.
Tim & Renee Svoboda, Minnesota

Excellent!
The trip was everything and more. Great guides great group of people
and a wonderful campsite! The guides did a great job on creating
very tasty meals including getting a fresh salmon from a local fisherman
and making a wonderful salmon fest for us all. We really enjoyed
the wine at the end of the day!!!
Sue Pischke, Wisconsin

Excellent,
sensational !!!!!!!!!! This trip I can honestly say has been the
best holiday I have ever had. I could not fault the way I was treated,
I haven't been as relaxed for as long as I can remember and I will
be back!
Water taxi to and from camp was a smooth transaction they even went
out of their way on the way back to show us some more humpbacks!
What can you say about the meals, they were presented as if we were
staying at a 5 star hotel regardless if we had kayaked to a beach
for lunch or it was in camp, always something different and always
tasted great.
Gary Tuffnell, UK

First-class
experience. The best adventure trip that I have been on or could
imagine. I couldn't imagine a better camping/dining experience.
Mark Martinez, Utah

The trip was
Fantastic. Wish I was still on it. Exquisite! Every meal was a treat,
and Luke prepared the best pasta I have ever had in my life. The
water taxi ride was great - friendly operator and fun ride.
Nicole Caldwell, Texas

I made several
calls to your office to check on things and was always met with
a friendly answer or solution. You run a very nice and responsible
business. The meals were great. Sam & Luke did a marvelous job
and I loved all the fresh vegetables and fruit – good job.
I think the Orca kayak trip was great and that Northern Lights takes
very good care of their customers. Vancouver Island is gorgeous
and I especially enjoyed the weather changes. It was a mix of sun,
clouds, mist and rain, and to me that made the experience complete.
You run a good and responsible business.
PS - Your trip book is fantastic. Everybody studied it before, during
and after the trip – thank you.
Marianne Meyer, Illinois

THE MEALS WERE
FABULOUS! When I tell my friends about the trip, I can never decide
what to talk about first: the wildlife or the food. Everything was
incredibly fresh and tasty. The presentation was beautiful and way
above anything I ever expected.
Rebecca Atkins, Illinois

This
was my second trip. Quality was excellent. Pre-trip prep and pack,
field guide/reading list excellent. Guides excellent (for me this
and the pre-trip information are the most important thing. All three
guides were excellent). Seems to attract fabulous group of people.
Quality of equipment etc excellent.
Exactly the right balance between outdoors/adventure and safety/comfort.
Good that didn’t have to bring sleeping bag, rainwear, headtorch
etc from UK.
Meals are very good. Always plenty and good quality/variety. The
barbeques at camp were a good improvement since my last trip and
the smoked salmon is fabulous.
The wildlife was fabulous and the two days we saw Orca close up
were the obvious highlight.
Had a wonderful time and will definitely come again.
Joel Scott, UK

I thought it
was fantastic. Totally exceeded any expectations I had.
Meals on the trip were fantastic! The guides did a great job of
accommodating everyone's preferences.
Everyone associated with Northern Lights was very professional,
considerate and courteous. It was the best trip that I have ever
taken & would love to do another.
Heather Hogan, Illinois
Incredible!
I still have no idea how lettuce can keep for 6 days without refrigeration!
Excellent meal preparation and always lots to feed everyone! Well
organized, guides organized activities according to the groups’
desires and created a memorable vacation experience for everyone.
Janine & Chris Cardiff, Alberta

I have been
fortunate to go on a number of adventure style trips in various
parts of the world and I can say it terms of personnel, equipment,
quality of the experience this was the best I have been on. Meals
were outstanding, the time and care that went into preparation was
impressive and the quality of the meals was fantastic.
Peter Gardner, Australia

Food
was Great!! Creative, tasty and plentiful. Full of variety and never
left hungry. Equipment used was great; organization was top-notch.
Never experienced a more organized operation from the packing to
the transport, etc. Great campsites; Pace of trip was okay; NL can't
control the weather, so it was nice to have alternative "hiking"
options on bad weather days.
Lisa DeSimone, Jew Jersey

The equipment
was great as were the views. The guides could not have been better.
Judy Hoffman, North Carolina

Enjoyed the
top quality kayaking and camping gear. The guest handbook &
field guide was excellent. Campsites were beautiful.
Sue Croley, Flordia

The equipment
(tents, dry bags, sleeping bags, kayaks, skirts, pfds, paddles,
water bottles, thermal cups) were first rate, guest handbook was
super, campsites well laid out, BIFF's very functional, scenery
was breathtaking. Everyone was very helpful and accommodating to
our needs.
Bob Minthorn, Florida

Notes
from our 2006 guests
Excellent,
great guides, great people, superb surroundings – everything
and more that I expected. Trip of a lifetime! Don’t change
a thing!
I thoroughly enjoyed myself! The guides worked so hard and non stop
to ensure we were all happy, well fed and cared for. I couldn’t
thank them enough for making it the best trip I have ever had! What
an experience.
I have been so impressed with how organized Northern Lights has
been from initial booking to the flight home – superb trip!
Helen Lindsay, UK

The best holiday
of my life! Utterly brilliant!
Beautiful food and impressive variety.
Martin Linklater, UK

John and Sam
were so outstanding and just such a pleasure to be with I soon fell
in love with life on the boat. There truly was a place for everything.
The food was great. Sam could easily be a 4-star chef. I marveled
at how she worked that small stove, especially after a day of being
our kayak guide.
Helen Welter, Maryland

This
was an adventure of a lifetime. So much of the trip was everything
and much more than I had expected. The opportunity you provided
to observe the wildlife in an exciting but safe way was priceless.
The quality was top notch when it came to the kayaking equipment
and clothes provided, food, professional guides, and preparing your
guests with the indispensable Handbook & Field Guide.
What can I add that hasn't already been said about the fabulous
food at the Blackfish Cafe! Fresh, bountiful, beautifully presented
whether it was on the rocks, at the beach, or on the table. It truly
was the highlight of the trip (OK, next to the orcas and the grizzlies).
Sharon Smith, Colorado

The perfect
weather and your planning and experience made for 1st class trip.
This trip was more than expected and I would recommend it to anyone.
The length of daily paddles was just about right for the group.
Excellent Meals, many surprises – all pleasant, great presentation,
much more than expected. I have always wanted to explore this part
of BC, this trip made that possible and it was a very positive introduction.
I am planning to return either kayaking or boating/fishing.
Jim Driscoll, Washington

The trip was
excellent, far beyond my expectations. Each person was given respect
and attention – our facilities were so wonderful. Perfect
group, weather, experiences, food was excellent, creative, delicious.
Sharon Driscoll, Washington

Watercolor that Sharon did after her trip

Overall, except
for my very first trip, this was the best trip ever. The setting
of the house was perfection, guides the best ever, food good as
usual. 7 days of perfect fall weather. Several close whale encounters.
Best group ever.
Heidi Mosbarger, Washington

No Faults, I
really enjoyed it and would certainly suggest it to anyone interested.
Northern Lights provided a full and exciting adventure, allowing
us to explore new areas of wildlife in which we didn’t get
in the UK. We saw loads of wildlife and it was absolutely fantastic.
The region and scenery were extremely beautiful and to have some
brilliant guides make the experience even better! The meals presented
by the guides were absolutely fantastic and very tasty! We were
always fed very well.
Gemma James, Wales

First rate,
one of my best holidays. It wasn’t just about orcas and humpbacks,
but the whole experience of camping, kayaking, night paddle, the
food, the people, the little bays, the driftwood, the kelp, the
fires, I could go on and on.
I’ve done a great deal of camping all over the work. But never
have I eaten such a variety of fantastically prepared and laid out
food. Little snack bags a great idea too.
A very well planned trip, never a dull moment. We had a fantastic
group and the guides did a great job of keeping everybody interested
and well fed. There was no pressure to help out, but we all wanted
to anyway. A holiday I will always treasure. We went as a family,
and although the kids were the youngest on the trip 14, 18, the
both had a fantastic time.
Mike James, Wales

The trip was
everything we expected and more. It was super! Very well organized
throughout the trip, from the office staff to the guides. Beautiful
area. Quality food. We had a great time. WOW – great food!
Susan & Mark Vossler, Washington

The trip was fantastic.
We saw many new things and wonderful new experiences. Your guides
truly go above and beyond expectations and really make your trips
so special. It is apparent that you truly care about the customer’s
experience and put a significant amount of effort into every detail.
Frank & Maria Bird, California

Reid
Scharenberg, Washington

Everything
that Northern Lights arranged went off without a hitch. I felt safe
and secure the entire time and it was so nice to know that NLE was
behind our travel bookings. It helped so much to read the travel
guide that Northern Lights puts out ahead of time. I was truly impressed
by the quantity and quality of the information provided. Port McNeill
exhibited a lot of that BC hospitality that I've come to love. It
was a great experience staying in the town and adventuring out on
our own for a bit. All services were wonderful!
You have spoiled my future
camping experiences forever. Where else do you get pancakes, stuffed
french toast, pasta and sushi on a camping trip? It was unbelievable!
The guides were obviously excellent cooks and the meals were so
well thought out! Even having hot chocolate, tea and coffee for
us on those colder days was thoughtful and very very appreciated!
It is so obvious that
Northern Lights is an experienced organization. From the first meeting
we had with our guides, when we were given our colour coded, water-proof,
humoursly labeled bags, I knew we were in good hands. Our guides
were incredible, caring people. The town of Port McNeill was beautiful
and picturesque. The campsite was fabulous, comfortable and well
maintained. The scenery was breathtaking and the wildlife was astonishing.
I've been gushing
about this trip to everyone since my return and hope to have swayed
more than a few to try it out for themselves. I was amazed at how
quickly I caught on to kayaking and how much I enjoyed the entire
experience. There is no doubt that I'll be back again!
Melanie
Stone, Ontario

We
were treated so well. The meals were excellent and the overall trip
was fantastic.
Clare Welker, Texas
Everything was flawless. April was
extremely helpful as I was planning my trip. I called her several
times and asked her all sorts of questions regarding our logistics,
including where to stay during our time on the island pre-trip,
ferry information, packing concerns, etc. She was patient and helpful
and it was comforting having that support. All fell into place beautifully!
Oh my!!! The meals were incredible! Not only was
the quality of food amazing, but the presentation was something
to behold. I loved how our guides kept bringing out more food without
prior warning. The coffee bar with quality coffee… both regular
and decaf… was quite a treat. Well done! Even if I didn't
partake in the chocolate chip cookie with peanut butter delicacy,
I still thought the food was outstanding. Sushi on a camping trip???
Amazing!
The trip quality
was wonderful...Both Rob and I were reluctant to go on a group trip
since we both have quite a bit of experience doing trips on our
own. We feared the group dynamics could be off, it wouldn't be challenging
enough for us, guides with personality types that may not fit our
style...NONE of these fears manifested. The scenery was beautiful,
the people were great, the down time to relax was just right, the
weather cooperated nicely, the paddling levels seemed to be even
and we were able to travel at a good rate, the campsite was perfect
and I loved that everything was set up for us. We were truly pampered
and well taken care of and for us this was a treat! We also had
the opportunity to see great wildlife. The orcas and humpbacks gave
us several good shows and our expectations were met. We had a terrific
time.
Suzy & Rob Schamberg, California

The meals were
awesome! And the trip far exceeded my expectations!! It was just
so fantastic – I want to come back again! What was the best
was the attention to EVERY little detail and the guides were always
pleasant, smiling and knowledgeable.
Marion Valero-Lehman, Iowa

I
enjoyed the kayaking, the scenery, the camaraderie among the other
participants. Laurel and Cory cooked up some of the most fantastic
meals I have ever tasted. They did outstanding work.
Sheila Dumas, Florida

Excellent!
Every aspect of the trip was well planned and executed. The guide
and skipper made our group feel at home on the Spirit Bear. It is
difficult to put my thoughts into words. The trip exceeded my expectations
in every way. Every day was a magical adventure. I had forgotten
what it was like to explore.
The meals were excellent. Each meal was delicious and the presentation
was beautiful. It was obvious that much time and preparation went
into each meal.
Missy Spivy, West Virginia

Outstanding
trip. Skipper John Manning is a true professional, enjoyed his company
and would definitely want him on another trip of this sort. I felt
totally at ease with him. Whale watching was as good as it gets.
Anything better and the whales would’ve been in our boat!
Hope Jones-Alger & Toshio Alger, Colorado

We
saw an incredible amount & variety of wildlife, had perfect
weather and, of course, we had amazing guides. I couldn't have asked
for a better pair for us. My friends started off the trip very nervous.
They ended it saying it was the best trip of their lives. We had
a lot of high points, but the best was probably when the dolphins
were surfing the wake of the Avon near Kwatsi Bay. They were close
enough we could have touched them. At some point each of us said
'I needed this trip.' We realize you didn't have control over what
we saw or the weather, but thank you for what you did have control
over.
Leah Hopkins, West Virginia

This
was one of the best paddles I’ve ever had. The guides were
excellent.
Bill Van Ry, Oregon
Wonderful
experience which we continue to recommend to friends and family.
Herb Brosbe, California

Our guides were
friendly, very knowledgeable, and funny. The chemistry was excellent
in our group and they helped us all the get along and work together.
The meals were delicious! Some very happy memories were made. Our
group was so positive and our guides worked hard to make sure we
were happy.
Chris DiGilio, Illinois

I
loved the trip with Northern Lights and feel sad that is over already.
I could have spent many more days out in the Johnston Strait sea
kayaking! Perfect! I Enjoyed the pick-up and drop-off service from
Port Hardy, 2 nights at hotel and 2 marvelous trips with the water
taxi to and from the camp sites. Superb that the water taxi made
an extra turn for the porpoises and an extra stop for whales! The
meals were Delicious and extraordinary, too. Never had a lasagna
or pizza while camping before! And all that without an oven! From
all the trips I already did in Alaska, Norway, Sweden and New Zealand,
this one has really been the best one! I just loved it.
Wiebke Wirth, Germany

Meals were very
healthy and sumptuous. We were very impressed with the diversity
and quite surprised that we were not offered the same meal twice!
Nice job! The chocolate brownies were an unexpected surprise! Having
had the opportunity over the past 15 years to travel extensively
throughout Canada with various operators, I can easily rank the
Spirit Bear trip with Northern Lights in the top 1 percentile. I
would have no hesitation recommending the trip to future potential
guests.
James Fisher, British Columbia

The whole trip
was excellent – well managed and set-up from start to finish.
From April at the office, who is so friendly and helpful, to the
water taxi staff who were friendly, courteous and helpful. Safety,
etc to the experience of seeing wildlife and the challenge and excitement
of the kayak trip. Guides were great, the campsites were well located
and the scenery etc was beautiful. Cooking and quality of food was
excellent and beyond what we expected for camping. People in BC
were very friendly and nice. Definitely one of my favorite holidays
and I’ve had many good ones!
Nora O’Loughlan, UK

Quality of food
& meals was very good, lots of work put into meals. The safety
of the trip was great, it was a very enjoyable experience. Great
trip and excellent guides.
Susan McAviney, UK

The meals were
outstanding, catered to my wife’s lack of dairy incessantly.
Amazing overall effort and freshness and variety. Outstanding guides
couldn’t have been more accommodating and detailed, great
accommodations and camp, kayaks and equipment.
Paul Ferreter, California

I love all aspects
of what you do. I can’t think that any other company could
do everything consistently as well as you do. I will be back. The
food was well prepared and very tasty, a triumph as usual. The trip
was as good as any I have been on in the past.
Kevin Bird, UK

The trip exceeded
all our expectations. We loved it. It was our second trip (we went
16 years ago with you).
Dan & Lenore Rick, Hawaii

All services
were good. Even though we didn't use all the services you listed
in the book, it was an excellent source for us to start with. Meals
were wonderful! My favorite was the pasta dinner. A+. I really appreciate
how the guides took care of all our needs, kept us safe, made it
easy for us and gave us whatever reflective space we as individuals
needed or wanted. This was a trip of a lifetime! I know that I have
friends that are interested and want to come back as refreshed as
I did.
Brenda Townsend, Texas

Thank
you so much Northern Lights for an amazing outdoor experience! The
entire experience, from time of booking through to the actual REMARKABLE
trip, was a class act. Setting, People, Food, Guides, Kayaking,
ORCAS ……. Unforgettable!
With Deep Appreciation for what you offer….
Sharon Bitz, Calgary

Well done! I
had a wonderful experience, excellent guides, wonderful guests and
super weather! Nice improvements with the boat bags and other gear.
The meals, as usual (our 3rd trip), were outstanding! I looked forward
to many of the meals – sushi, pasta bar especially.
We have been on six kayak trips – three with you and three
with other outfitters. It is amazing how well organized and execute
your group works – all of the staff. Your company is by far
the best we have gone with and we look forward to paddling with
you again.
Dennis Staats, Oregon

At Water's Edge
is the nicest B&B I have ever been in. Chris and Karen Stewart
were wonderful hosts. Frank (water taxi) on the way back gave us
the best show ever. 3 pods of Whales and Dah'ls porpises. Elan Travel
did great work also. Best meals ever. Never missed the beef. Pumpkin
pancakes are my favorite and I about died when we had them. Couldn't
believe you could have such fancy food camping. The guides outdid
themselves. I had a great time. Had fun kayaking. Like the nite
time paddle. Very nice kayaks. Great set up in camp. I had a blast.
I am not a camper but felt I could do at least 3 nites. I did and
am very proud of myself.
Martine Felts, California

The meals were
excellent! And there was always plenty of food. I never had to use
my own snacks that I had brought. Kayaks and paddles were awesome!
Gina Covello, California

Accommodations
very good; staff service amenable to Northern Lights Expeditions.
Port Hardy airport taxi prompt; water taxi service exceeds expectations
when skipper takes time to stop to enjoy whales passing nearby and
black bear & her cubs on beach.
The food was excellent! It’s amazing what your guides can
put together at campsites and lunch ‘on the go’ while
out paddling. Fresh fruit and veggies a plus in my mind. Two thumbs
up for Blackfish Café.
Very organized and enjoyable. Guides did their best to meet group’s
desires while keeping safety as utmost importance. Group dynamics
gelled amazingly quickly and was a great interpersonal experience
as well as ecological adventure. The amazing orcas passing on day
5 capped off a fabulous week. Overall an enjoyable experience. Hope
to join you on another trip soon, and definitely recommending Northern
Lights to friends & family.
Joyce Antal, North Carolina

Food at lodge
was superb including the presentation even while kayaking. Our guides
were full of local information. We had a great time – can’t
wait to come back. And the lodge itself was delightful.
Chriss Emmel, Washington

Wonderful!! This is our third trip with Northern Lights and it won’t
be our last. We have told friends about it and two have traveled
with you. The hotel was quiet and clean. The staff was very friendly.
Every meal was delicious! Northern Lights is the best outfitter
we have ever traveled with!!! It was so much fun getting to know
people from all over the world – Wales, France, Brazil, and
five different states in the US.
Molly Staats, Oregon

Excellent time.
Made new friends. Guides were wonderful. Thanks for a great trip!
Kevin & Samantha Fung, Ontario

A good trip
– well organized, beautiful area and wildlife, good food.
David Seldon, Ontario

The entire week
was awesome ... John and Ellery did everything to make the trip
as good as possible. I mentioned that I liked lemon with my water
and John make a quick trip to the market the next morning!! We saw
orcas and humpbacks, grizzlies and a black bear plus many birds
and small creatures. The food was delicious, the kayaking as good
as it gets, especially when you can call the boat and have John
come pick you up. The company was delightful, interesting, and great
fun. Many thanks to them both for a superb job.
Dee and Art Rosenshein, New York

Loved
it. I like the values your company seems to embrace. I loved seeing
all the whales and seals and starfish... I enjoyed the exercise.
The scenery is gorgeous. I enjoyed being pampered.
Sandy Welter, Ohio

I can't decide
whether this was my favorite vacation ever or my second favorite
vacation ever. But don't worry; the top 2 are both Northern Lights
Trips. (2003 inside passage trip, 2006 spirit bear)
We took the Victoria Clipper from Seattle to Victoria. David himself
met us at the ferry, and was able to take our bags from us so we
could enjoy a few hours of touring Victoria before boarding the
boat. It was also a nice touch for him to check with us for any
shopping list suggestions for the final grocery store run to stock
the boat.
Andy Welter, Ohio

Second trip,
awesome time, guests and staff were great. Meals were interesting,
healthy and more than enough. Great trip, guides went out of their
way to make the trip great.
Jon Shapiro, Texas

Grat experience.
Enjoyed camp location and trip choices. Top quality event; great
staff and great meals – good quality and variety.
Elio Levy, Florida

The adventure
was fabulous given the wonderful guides and the magnificent setting.
Alexis Girard, New Mexico

The trip was
the most relaxing one I’ve ever done. The food was fabulous.
The kindness and serenity of the guides and the natural beauty were
like balms for the spirit.
Cece Goodwin, Maryland

A really great
experience! I’d highly recommend it to anyone. Two of our
group had never kayaked before, but the guides had them paddling
like pros in no time at all! Very well organized and executed. We
hoped to see lots of wildlife, and we weren’t disappointed!
A great value! The meals were super; exceeded our expectations!
Larry Zappone, Washington

Impeccably organized,
with every details attended to, the wholeness of the package rings
out ‘excellence’. Your sincere and constant care on
my behalf has made the difference to me. I consistently felt your
wonderful support making sure that each of my (vast array of) concerns
was met: from food to health, safety, transportation, comfort and
enjoyment. The trip provided all these elements and more!!
Peggy Fisher, California

Overall I would
say I received full value for the money spent. Relaxing and decompressing
in a quiet beautiful place with friendly people and excellent food.
In summary: Thanks, I needed that. :)
Richard Todd, Washington

Notes
from our 2005 guests
Every
step of the way I was impressed with the quality. I love the Handbook
and Field Guide. The water taxi ride was a great way to travel to
the island where the camp was located. The taxi skipper slowed down
several times to point out eagles, dolphins and other interesting
things. That was great! I like the way you organized all the dry
bags which made it so easy to find things in the tent. The tent
and sleeping pads made it very comfortable. All the gear seemed
to be top notch.
I appreciate the quality of the guides. They were each polite, informative,
experienced and made me feel safe and confident doing a sport that
was completely new to me. The food on the camping trip was a real
surprise and a wonderful treat. Every meal was prepared beautifully
and with flair. The snack packs were really nice. I never felt hungry!
Everything was great!
Our adventure with Northern Lights was the first time we ever signed
up with an "outfitter". You exceeded all of my expectations
in every way. The geographic area is stunningly beautiful, we saw
so many orcas I lost count; some up very close too! We saw many
other wonderful sights and I enjoyed the paddling a lot. I was very
impressed with the guides. They all worked very hard to make our
trip the best it could be. The low point was not wanting it to end.
Next time I will sign up for the longer trip.
Peggy McCants, Huntington Beach CA

"I can
say nothing except fantastic. I loved every minute of the trip.
The trip was so much more than I expected or hoped for. I would
do this again in a heartbeat, and I will recommend you to anyone.
Excellent!"
Sierra Feldmann, Apple Valley CA

Fantastic, awesome
do not begin to describe the trip. It was perfect from start to
finish. We had a wonderful mix of people and guides. The whale sightings
were indescribable. To say it was beyond my hopes and expectations
is an understatement. Our numerous whale sightings were absolutely
awesome. It literally took my breath away during our close encounters.
Seeing whales was the highlight but the night paddle was also wonderful
– topped off by a surprise chocolate cake!! I cannot say enough
about the quality of the trip. Everything was very well handled
from equipment which was top of the line to all of the arrangements.
The guides were fantastic. I honestly do not think there is anything
which could have been done any better.
Peggy & Chuck Haddock, Wisconsin Rapids
WI

Fantastic!
Superb! Awesome! Perfect! Your trips are definitely of the highest
caliber anyone could ever hope to reach. All other companies in
the industry pale in comparison. I can’t get enough of your
amazing and wonderful adventures.
I can’t even begin to thank you enough for such a wonderful
and incredibly memorable trip this summer. It was just as much fun
planning the trip with you as it was being on the trip. Now, to
describe the entire Northern Lights team as thoughtful, caring,
professional, extremely organized, fun and just incredibly amazing
would all be understatements. You are all awesome!
Since day one, I have considered the Inside Passage as ‘home.’
When I’m away I miss it dearly and can’t really think
of anywhere else I’d rather be. But, as in love as I am with
the grandeur, tranquility and absolutely every aspect of British
Columbia, I sincerely have to say that the highlights of my trips
are the guides. There were no limits as to how hard they tried to
ensure that my every hope and expectation about the trips were met.
That really made the experience special. I can honestly say that
this was my favorite trip yet!
The meals at the Blackfish Café always get ten gold stars
from me. The food was fabulous!
I had the best time ever. My trip was everything I had hoped for
and beyond. Way beyond! If I paddled every single day with Northern
Lights it wouldn’t be enough. It was been an absolute honor
to be a part of your adventures. Endless memories that will always
be treasured. I’m already dreaming of my next trip.
I am often asked if sea kayaking is difficult. The only difficulty
I experience paddling with Northern Lights is having to say ‘good-bye’
at the end of the week. This is my fifth year having journeyed with
Northern Lights and I can assure you it definitely will not be my
last. It is always an honor to travel with you.
With deepest gratitude and best wishes always,
Julie H, California

Hope you are
well. Just wanted to say thanks for all your help organizing our
Wild Orca trip from oz, you made it really easy and it was definitely
the highlight of our trip around the world (so far!!). To see the
orcas up so close and personal was such a spiritual experience,
possibly some of the most memorable moments in my lifetime - other
than the time we spent with the grizzly bears in Knights Inlet.
We really hope we can get back and do it all again one day soon.
Also wanted to say big ups to Joi and Kelsey, they were great guides
and made for a really memorable time.
Vida Campbell-MacKenzie & Matthew Cheeseman,
Australia

I would just like to
say what a fantastic time myself and my husband had on our Orca
adventure trip with you back in August. The guides were exceptional
and the whales were truly breathtaking. It was certainly a honeymoon
to remember. The only trouble is that we did not want to leave!
Laura Chidgey, United Kingdom

What a great
time!! And I loved our skipper and guide. An exceptional overall
experience.
Deborah Duwe, San Diego CA

This was the
best holiday of my life. Kayaks and clothing provided were top of
the range, very good, felt comfortable. Camping was amazing, the
views were breathtaking. The food was much better than expected.
Standard and choice of food was brilliant. So many sights that are
once in a life time experienced. We saw more than enough wildlife
and orcas were magnificent. The whole trip was perfect, the guides,
the people, and the atmosphere were the best.
Adam Millward, London England

The
trip turned out to be a trip of a lifetime for both of us. The area
that we kayaked was such a beautiful place, the scenery, every day
was a new adventure. What makes a trip like this is the people that
you travel with; the guides, and other companions were a great bunch
and we made some good friends along the way.
Quality of equipment was excellent. Comfortable kayaks felt great
(stable and safe). Tents felt warm and cozy and the camp sites were
in an ideal position. A trip like this depends on the quality of
the guides, you have a first rate team and it was a pleasure to
meet such people who take pleasure in their work.
Ron Millward, London England

Thank you for
being there with a kayak trip to the beautiful northern islands
of my country, Canada. I felt so privileged to be able to enjoy
the scenic beauty, clean air, the quiet, the water, the whales and
all the marine life. A kayak camping trip is just super. Your guides
did a wonderful job, and I met some wonderful people from around
the world.
Our guides could open their own café – the meals were
excellent, varied and delicious – wish they could come home
with me. Sushi on a kayaking trip – that is living! Thanks
for the real coffee too. A wonderful holiday – well planned,
excellent guides, well organized and good equipment. 5++ stars!
Charlotte Dixon, Victoria BC

Thank you...Thank
you...Thank you
With all of the questions that I had for you and all of the doubts
before the trip….all was wonderful and doubts were laid to
rest with the orchestration of the trip. I, being a professional
tour director, could not have been more pleased as to the Inside
Passage trip with Joi Mozuna and Joelle Bienvenue. They were great
host and hostess (guides); always being at ease with the entire
group….smiling…and magically preparing wonderful gourmet
meals three times a day. Also, not to be forgotten is the expertise
of the ground staff; behind the scene is just as important as the
front scene for the success of a well-planned tour. Little details
helped to make the trip first class. Thanks to all at Northern Lights
Expeditions for a most memorable trip!
Jan Thune, Lecanto, FL

Just a letter
of follow-up regarding the trip my family and I took on the Spirit
Bear. As I mentioned, each of our trips with Northern Lights has
been a unique, different and most memorable experience in every
way. The arrangements of the meals, variety of cuisine, and the
camaraderie both during mealtimes and ‘social hours’
were superb.
There aren’t any words to describe our debt of gratitude over
many years to you all. I would have difficulty understanding anyone
wishing to kayak and explore the BC coast with anyone other then
Northern Lights Expeditions. Your management is obviously superb,
and I can assure you all the guides and captains I have encountered
have deep admiration and a commitment to the company. Having played
a significant role in running a medical business enterprise over
many years – I clearly recognize what an impressive accomplishment
that represents.
Joe Daily, Phoenix AZ

Excellent trip
– right down to the wonderful sunny weather. It couldn’t
have gotten any better as far as I’m concerned. Very organized,
professional knowledgeable very friendly guides. Saw lots of wildlife,
especially orcas up close next to us, and weather was just beautiful.
Camp sites were also very nice, and kayaking routes were nicely
varied. The meals were excellent – can’t get any better
as far as I’m concerned. Particularly liked having t he fresh
fruits/vegetables every day.
Susan Sofia, Methuen MA

It was a terrific
trip, with superb views of Orcas every day, once including a group
of (if I recall correctly) 2 males, 3 females and two young. Also
of a group of about 50 dolphins which came close to us too, and
made a great noise. Being so close to such wonderful animals from
the close proximity of a kayak was a great experience. It was my
first ever kayaking experience, fantastic, and I had absolutely
no problems. I am now in my second childhood, at 80 years young.
The food was terrific, and always a surprise, even with sushi!
Morrin Acheson, Switzerland

The trip was outstanding
in everyway. The Spirit Bear turned out beautifully. Both guides
were flexible and wanted to individualize the trip for our desires.
Setsuko Chambers, Tucson AZ

I
was on the recent trip and wanted you to know what a great experience
I had. My son and daughter-in-took me as a birthday present. It
was without a doubt the finest present a father could receive. The
Handbook & Field Guide were very helpful in preparation for
and being on the trip. The Handbook part was so complete that I
needed and wore everything that was suggested. It was a great trip
and I would go again in a heartbeat.
Tom Sanglier, Flint MI
"My
wife and I returned from our kayak adventure walking on air. It
was the most fantastic trip we could have taken to celebrate our
10th wedding anniversary.
Everything about the trip was so professional and unique in the
experiences that we shared with a great group that we will remember
it for ever.
Our two guides were superhuman; producing fantastic meals, great
knowledge of the waters and the wildlife. They are a real credit
to the company and performed to a really high standard.
I will be recommending this trip to all our friends and already
we are planning to return with our two children (once they are old
enough) so that they too can experience the trip of a lifetime !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for making this happen."
Pete and Ruth Sturgess, England

"The overall
trip was spectacular – I had an incredible and enjoyable time
with all the creature comforts plus the great food that camping
usually doesn’t provide. The meals were spectacular!! Not
only were the meals just great, but the presentation was just fabulous.
It was my second trip and I will come back again. Plus, I will still
rave to others how great of a time and adventure it was for me."

I
give you all my best compliments for the organization of your trip:
all was simply perfect.
I participate in so many trips by horse, canoe, and whatever that
I can honestly say that your trip is number one in my best list
for organization, equipment and food. In other places there was
often a very high standard but not this continuity of really top
services in all the aspects of the trip.
I liked very much the food: light but energetic and not boring.
Guides are really top despite they were at end of season. They were
really good and always ready to all the necessities of everybody.
I loved all your gear: the tent is the best I ever used. Your rain
gear and back pack with little waterproof bags was just perfect.
So all my compliments for what you created. I loved so much the
places and the operators. I'll be more than happy to come back.
ciao.
Franco Barbagallo, Italy

As previous
Northern Lights clients we had very high expectations, and they
were far surpassed. The gear was excellent and worked well. The
crew was awesome and accommodating. Even the weather and wildlife
cooperated, which was icing on the cake.
We took the float plane to Port McNeill. Trip went smoothly and
was very scenic. We saw orcas in Johnstone Strait from the plane.
The food was excellent, fresh, tasty, well prepared and presented.
We want to live on the Spirit Bear! It was awesome. We felt safe
and comfortable at all times. The quality of the gear and crew was
first rate. The crew went the extra mile for us. Their knowledge
of the area and environment were impressive and added greatly to
our enjoyment of the trip.
Glenn Kincaid, Castle Valley UT

The overall
trip and experience of this kayak adventure was excellent, it was
well organized, we saw plenty of wildlife, weather turn out great
and the guides were very professional and fun to be around. They
were always aware of our needs and adjusted to make everyone happy.
The meals on the trip were great, seemed like you ate a lot and
the menu was very good. I am normally the cook when doing kayak
trip with our club, I hope they don't expect the same presentation.
Kevin Graczyk, St George UT

The trip exceeded
my expectations. It was a very enjoyable trip. I would do this again
with your company in a heartbeat and would suggest my friends do
the same.
Eunice Pierce, Santa Clara CA

I had a wonderful
time and Chris and Marco did everything expected to ensure our enjoyment.
I would recommend this trip to anyone. The meals were fantastic
and superbly prepared and presented. It was the trip of a lifetime.
I'll always remember it.
Ken Cogger, Conifer, CO

We had a great
time, saw an abundance of orcas, the camp sites were wonderful,
top-notch equipment, lots of paddling and knowledgeable, cheerful
guides. The food was wonderful - terrific, fresh assortment - well
prepared, beautifully presented. We would & will recommend northern
lights without reservation.
Bill & Gretchen Norman, Henderson, NV

This was my
second trip with Northern Lights and it was just as enjoyable as
the first. There were differences – such as the wildlife,
campsites, weather and guides which made it a new adventure. I hope
to vacation with you again.
Karen Smith-Collins, Baldwinsville, NY

Wonderful! I can’t
say enough. The meals were excellent! Yummy! Fresh seafood was awesome!
Such healthy food – especially nice since I am diabetic and
need to control my blood sugars.
Marianne Simon, Burien, WA

This
trip was so much fun. The guides were very knowledgeable about the
wildlife and the area. I also enjoyed their knowledge and humor
and all of their help since we had never kayaked before. Great cooks!
The meals were awesome. I was amazed at the wonderful meals we had
while camping. We had very good karma and saw the orcas very close
to our kayaks. It was a very cool experience. We had such a great
time and we met some really nice people.
Deb Jenkins, Thornton CO

It was wonderful.
We were both very happy with the experience. Our guides were outstanding
– very patient, tolerant, talented and informative.
Darrell & Janice Hamon, Katy TX

Meals were really
fantastic...couldn't have asked for anything better...
Pat Graczyk, St George, UT

The guides worked
very hard and were very professional. The meals were a ‘shock
and awe’ campaign on my taste buds.
Joel Helleso, Las Vegas NV

I totally enjoyed
my trip as I have on previous occasions. Don’t change a thing.
You can’t improve on perfection.

I wouldn’t
hesitate to recommend the Wild Orca Adventure, particularly to those
with relatively little experience. The meals were very impressive,
I didn’t expect the guides to be expert cooks. My high expectations
were fully satisfied.
Dean Chamberlain, Toronto ON

The guides,
food, equipment, lodge, float plane were all great. Everybody in
the group said the meals exceeded their expectations; really superior.
Bill Deeney, Oxnard CA

The
trip guides, camping, meals, people and the area were all –
awesome! The meals were great! I never eat so good on a camping
trip. We had a wonderful time, met some really nice people. The
overall trip was a great experience and an awesome vacation.
Walt Jenkins, Thornton CO

Great
fun! Great adventure! Great people! Great location! Great wildlife!
We enjoyed every minute thanks to our fellow paddlers and our wonderful
guides. The meals were excellent! For a dedicated meat eater I really
must commend Joelle and Kelsey for getting me through the week without
withdrawal symptoms for the "red stuff". A Tour-de-Force.
Great gear; it was just right for the conditions. The attention
to detail, planning and leadership was of the highest order. Thank
you.
Michael & Carol-Ann Fleming, Scotland

The trip was
a good experience. I saw everything I wanted to see plus bears,
bald eagles, harbor porpoises and seals. Coming within 20 feet of
a male orca was the highlight of my trip. I just want to thank the
guides again for their professionalism. They were very curious,
helpful and fun to be around.
James Baldwin, Guam

Great flexibility
– Felt I was really getting a customized experience everyday.
Franz Gimmler, Arlington VA

Just now writing
to say that the Inside Passage trip we were on this past August
28th was far better than I ever anticipated. Our guides Luke, Tobi
and Chris were beyond exceptional and I definitely plan on taking
another trip in the future.
Thanks again.
Aaron Brinkerhoff, Novato CA

The assistance
from the office was fantastic in helping me to arrange my travel
arrangements. Fantastic! I really couldn't have asked for a better
experience. Everything that could be controlled by Northern Lights
was top notch, from the guides to the equipment. Even the things
that couldn't be controlled all were perfect including the weather,
the group, and the amount of wildlife that we were able to be a
part of.

We
just got back from our wonderful expedition and I just needed to
tell you, you’re a class act expedition company. We had a
better vacation than we could’ve even imagined. The three
guides you had there were super. A++ to each of them.
Thank you very much, I can’t say enough.
Daria Thompson, Haddam CT

This trip exceeded
any and all expectations; it was inspiring and calming. I just wish
I could go again. The meals were delicious and accommodating.
Amber Woods, Santa Fe NM

Though
we did as much homework as possible about the area and the trip,
we really weren't sure what to expect. As it turned out, everything
far surpassed our hopes. The food, company, guides, accommodations,
wildlife, weather, equipment -- all of it was excellent. We used
Kenmore Air and they were fantastic. Super helpful and a beautiful
flight. The meals exceeded our expectations. There was plenty to
eat, always a wide variety and everything was delicious. It was
the best vacation I have had and we are already talking about plans
for next year.
Frank & Maria Bird, San Pedro CA
"Wonderful!
From first contact through the end of our trip you did a wonderful
job! Your company is helpful & gracious, the trip was wonderful.
The night paddle was the high point of the week. I will recommend
you highly!"
Constance Wilson, Frankfort KY

"We have been planning
this for over 5 years. So sad it is over – so glad & thankful
your quality experience was open for us. Thank you for sharing this
very special part of the ‘Big Blue Marble’ with us.
It was all so good. I see no area for improvement. Keep everything
as it is.
This trip was top notch. The guides were professional, every thing
was well planned and the gear was great. We really appreciate that
you’ve stayed a small company in order to keep the quality
high. It was a wonderful trip and couldn’t have been better
in any way. It filled all of the expectations we’ve built
up over the last 5 or 6 years of wanting to do this. Thank you!"
Craig Feldmann, Apple Valley CA

"You have
very high standards for your guides, the planned trips, and the
experience you want your guests to have. Your meals were excellent.
Nice variety and very filling. I am very impressed with the quality
of your trips and the consistency in that quality between the different
trips each year."
Virginia Davis, Seattle WA

"I
had a terrific time. I really felt as though I was a guest in nature.
I felt like I could observe the animals without bothering them.
The scenery was spectacular and the accommodations were comfortable.

wonderful experience. The guides were professional, knowledgeable
and fun. I would do it again."
Marina Marshall, Apple Valley CA

"It was
absolutely one of my peak life experiences, thank you for planning
it and allowing me to participate. The ability that the guides had
to involve novices and not make them feel inferior, but instead
as valuable members of a team and to show that we all gained and
learned from each other was marvelous. The exposure to orcas and
other wildlife was better than even I had imagined."
Brent Wright, Fort Bragg CA

"The memories
and wonderful time I experienced will last a lifetime.
This trip was an excellent experience, our group was terrific and
our guides were professional. The equipment from kayaks, raingear,
tents was very good. We were amazed at the delicious meals that
were prepared. Great diversity."
The Van Buyten Family, Belgium

"The trip
was fantastic in every aspect. I would recommend Northern Lights
to anyone going on a similar trip. Was wonderfully impressed with
the quality and the diversity of the meals. Both guides were excellent
camp stove chefs. The night paddle was definitely the high point
of the trip."
Jim Boklage, Frankfort KY

"I
went with the feeling that it would be my once in a lifetime trip;
it was so enjoyable I will definitely be a returnee in the future.
The opportunity to see the wildlife and have such knowledgeable
guides was excellent. The meals were unbelievable, the presentation
was very attractive and imaginative.
Excellent, top notch, keep doing what you are doing!!!"

"Wonderful!
Everything from the boat ride to the kayaking, the food, the eagles,
the guides, the whales. It was all amazing! It was more than I dreamed
it would be. I wanted to stay there forever! The meals were great!!
I’ve never eaten better on a camping trip. The meals were
better than the ones I have at home."
Nicole Deacon, Scottsdale AZ

"I did
a lot of research before planning my first kayak trip. With my homework
done and my decision made, I expected to have a good experience.
Those expectations were confirmed when I received your trip handbook,
which reaffirmed how well your company is run and proved to be a
great resource.
I need to say that even with such high expectations… you guys
gave me an experience like no other and the likes of which I was
unable to imagine.
Our guides were superb and above expectations in every way. They
did their job in such a professional way that they made it look
easy. They had all of the skills required to provide each of your
guests with a great experience. Safety, education, fun, great food
preparation, and people managing come to mind, but I know there
are many more.
I am a ‘foodie’ who works in a gourmet cooking store
and I don’t know how you could have done any better with the
meals."
Judy Reback, Orange CA

"I
like my trips with Northern Lights because of the great guides and
the trip organization. Everything is so well organized it makes
for a smooth and joyous adventure. And the equipment provided is
of a good quality. I was pleasantly surprised at the animal viewing
from camp. The guides were great - appreciated their knowledge of
the area and their respect for wildlife."

"This was
one of the best vacations I’ve ever taken. I really appreciated
the help with the extra day trips and suggestions for travel. We
really had the perfect trip – weather and whales cooperated
so well. The food was superb and amazing. You spoiled us.
Here is an excerpt
from the letter I wrote to my family and friends at the end of our
trip:
Kayaking with orcas
and dolphins, porpoises, eagles, harbor seals, bears, marbled murreletts,
etc..... needless to say, it was an amazing trip.
It is true that
getting there can be half the fun. From Seattle, we took an airplane
smaller than the average SUV to Port McNeill, British Columbia.
It was a spectacular 2 1/2 hour bird's eye view over the islands
and inlets of the Pacific Northwest.
Our camp was
on a small island across Johnstone Strait from the northeast end
of Vancouver Island. It is completely undeveloped and within sight
of the orcas' favorite (and now protected) rubbing beaches in nearby
Robson Bight. There were Bald Eagles in the trees -- but as the
salmon had started their run, "most" of the eagles were
up the river and we "only" saw 5 or 6 a day.
We had our first
lunch on what was to become our favorite eating, chatting, resting
and watching area -- fondly known as "the rock". After
lunch we were just about to complete the kayak orientation when
the first orcas came by.
Dinner that
night was cedar planked fresh salmon cooked over the campfire. Northern
Lights food is incredible. We were constantly amazed by what our
guides pulled out of the bag and accomplished on a two-burner propane
stove. Restaurant fare pales by comparison.
Tuesday morning
dawned sunny and serene. Sipping coffee on a warm black rock in
the sun while watching Dall's porpoises swim by is a great way to
greet the day. We launched the kayaks after breakfast for an all
day paddle. I think it was before lunch that the A12's came by to
swim under our kayaks. Yes, that close. Orcas to the front, side
and back -- Brent and I didn't know which way to look.
To top it off,
we lunched on a beach (again amazed at what our guides pulled out
of the bag) and just as we were back in the water, a 4-point black-tailed
deer buck in velvet magically appeared. He was obviously in the
trees impatiently waiting for us to leave so he could have his lunch
of kelp. We saw quite a few Bald Eagles in the trees and harbor
seals on the rocks coming and going along with pigeon guillimots,
rhinoceros auklets and other unidentified skimming water birds.
After a solar
shower of salt water (with amazing soap that leaves skin and hair
soft and not salty), we settled down to dinner and a nap. We arose
after dark to observe the bioluminescence phenomenon from kayak.
It is a bit like seeing 4th of July sparklers underwater. Our paddles
dripped snowflakes and the fish and kelp were outlined in jewels.
Wednesday morning
a pod of Pacific white-sided dolphins happened by while breakfast
was cooking. Later we saw orcas in the distance. Breakfast was abandoned
as we flew to the kayaks with whatever we had on. This was the A30
pod. A large male passed by as we were getting into the kayaks but
close on his flukes were many more of his family. We positioned
ourselves to watch, and then the whales came to us. A female and
youngster passed just off our bows, another female and youngster
followed, and then a group of four in a line swam right under our
clustered boats.
I said the whales
came to us, but truly it was as if we weren't even there. Both encounters
were with whales on a mission. They didn't stop to chat or look
but chose to take their path towards us. It was clear they knew
we were there but they didn't veer off. I think we were simply entertaining
logs that they chose to swim under."
Tanya
Smart, Fort Bragg CA

" It
was very nice to have hotel and taxi arranged for us. Great to have
a taxi driver meet us at the airport and tell us when he would pick
us up at the end of the trip.
Tents, waterproof bags and rain gear – all equipment was very
good. Guides were top-notch. Scenery was great. Weather was perfect.
The food was excellent! Wonderful! Lots of fresh food and veggies
the whole trip. Lots of options built into most meals. The lasagna
was divine!"
